Tips on buying diamond engagement ring ?

The subject line says it all. I'm looking for information/stories about what to look for and what to watch out for while buying an engagement ring. I'm looking for a square princess-cut .75 - 100 carat and don't want to be ripped off. Any experiences you could share would be helpful! There are a number of diamond FAQs on both wedding home pages. Check out http://super.zippo.com/~altwed and http://www.wam.umd.edu/~sek/wedding.html Also, try a few places to get an understan...

Engagement ring question ?

It is quite striking and I can imagine my wife wearing it throughout our marriage as well. It is a platinum ring with a very beautiful diamond. It is the engagement ring and she does not have the matching wedding ring (if one ever existed). She recently had it appraised and sized for her finger. We are planning a trip to Paris in March to celebrate our relationship anniversary. I plan to propose to her on that trip. I would like to give her a ring to mark our engag...

Tanzanite And Diamond Ring?

Watching a jewelry tv channel, the message from the presenter was " Tanz is rare, buy now while you have the chance as mines are likely to be exhausted in 9 to 10 years". Whilst I would agree that it's both an attractive and expensive gem, if the gem becomes extinct and is no longer marketed or advertised, won't the price drop - as it fades from peoples memories? Investment piece or mueum piece? Does anyone know of any other gem quality minerals, that have disapeared and wha...

Non-diamond engagement ring?

I just wanted to get some opinions on a non-diamond engagement ring. I am not a big fan of mafia organizations, and DeBeers is one the worst. Its amazing to me that they managed to not only kill the rest of the diamond miners in South Africa, but now have engineered society so that you're expected to hand them 2 months of your salary. I don't have a problem with buying an expensive ring for my fiancee, but I would like to buy her an emerald instead (it would ma...

White Gold Solitaire Diamond Ring, Wedding ring question ?

Well, I personally like the look of all yellow gold. I, too, have a solitaire -- it is in a tiffany setting. I went with a 4mm gold band, and it looks great -- very simple and classic. I know a lot of people are going with the white gold or platinum rings these days because it seems to be a trend. I wear almost all silver jewelry, but I wanted my weddign ring to be gold. My hands are pretty small, and anything wider would have been too much. I think a total of 6mm ...

Platinum Princess Diamond Engagement Ring, Diamond Engagement Rings - What's the latest Fashion?

Whew. I was worried it might have been something along the lines of "wretched excess", instead of the soul of quiet elegance. Off on a tangent, wasn't it Oscar Wilde who said "A man who marries his lover usually leaves a an opening in that position"? A guy who sprung for a 1.85ct oval cut in a platinum setting...May I suggest here that folks give less emphasis to what is fashionable in engagement rings, and go more with A) what is classic and B) what they truly, tru...

Build Your Own Engagement Ring?

I may need to be doing this pretty soon (the way things are going as of now)! =) I've known him since I was about about 13 or 14, so you know the drill... =) Anyways, back to the topic! Have any of you ever designed your own engagement rings? If so, how did it turn out? I can't stand the thought of wearing a ring on my finger for the rest of my life, and having 25,000 other people wearing the SAME exact one! ;) Any tips for me?Have fun, but I have one suggestion...design/sketch to...

Wholesale Engagement Ring, Where to buy engagement ring?

I was sure this would be in a FAQ somewhere, but I couldn't find it. What are your experiences with buying engagement rings? I'm mainly interested in where (and where not!) to shop and buy, how to not get ripped off, the usual. I'm thinking about using one of the mall "chain" jewelers - which of them are good and bad? Or should I avoid them at all costs and use one of the "wholesalers"? Thanks - I'll summarize. (Or you could try talking me out of getting engaged - it might just...

Alternative engagement rings ?

I would like to hear from those who have opted for alternative engagement rings, either CZ's or colored stones?I have a tanzanite solitaire in my wedding set. I didn't want a diamond because while they are lovely, they are too flashy for me. I also have an "art" ring with a London blue topaz that I wear on my other hand. I've found that both stones tend to look cloudy and lose their depth if I don't clean them regularly. Cleaning them takes about 2 minutes - drop in the cleanse...

Vintage Style Engagement Ring, Anyone ever break an engagement?

What the hell does one do with the ring? Years ago I made the mistake of buying a $10,000 ring from Tiffany's. The engagement didn't "take". But now its time to lose the damn thing. It's been sitting around for too long and $10k shouldn't be stuck in a drawer. But it's not worth $10k, or is it? I know that Tiffanies charges a premium of 40%, but that's retail. I'd be happy if I could sell it for $6k, but after some telephone calls to folks who advertise that they buy...
