Tiffany Engagement Ring?Q.I am thinking of getting the engagement ring, my plan is to buy at Tiffany's . Can anyone kindly help me in giving some advice on whether it is a good place to buy a decent ring? A.I think that you will get a very good quality diamond at Tiffany. I also think that you will pay top dollar because you are buying it at Tiffany. I have had many customers who shopped at Tiffany for engagement rings and wedding rings. I was able to make them the same or even better quality ring for substantially less money than what Tiffany was selling the same ring. The reason that I can make a better quality ring than what you might get at Tiffany is that you get a lot more for your money. Let's assume that Tiffany sells a 1.0 ct round brilliant cut F color VS1 clarity stone for $8,000 - $10,000 in a plain setting. I could either get you: 1.) a bigger stone with same cut, color and clarity for that amount of money 2.) the same size stone but with higher quality OR 3.)Sell you the same size and quality for $4,700 - $6,000. I certainly did look at Tiffany's as part of my education in the 'search'. Tiffany's doesn't play around... you'll get a good product but be prepared to pay a premium for an engagement ring there. I bought my finance her engagement diamond ring on 47th street and did well on the 4 C's, etc. (GIA certified). Critical to getting good value, in my opinion, was becoming a correctly 'educated consumer', knowing what you want (or what factors are important in a diamond *too you*) and being savvy with the dealers (ie. don't let them hose you). For the timid or those not willing to put in the effort, go to Tiffany's and pay the price...this is the kind of store for you. wedding ring at Tiffany's = yes (or no) If your looking only for a simple gold wedding band (for either him or her), then options abound and you will get good value along 47th st. and elsewhere...these things are pretty cheap. It's a different story, however, if you're looking for for a wedding band that was more than simple - something with stones or design in it (which we were). I found a lot of junk when looking for a wedding bands for my bride. Especially at dept stores and even at the same 47th st. store where I bought the big rock (not surprising when you really think about it). My impression is that the stones used in 'premade' wedding bands are typically inferior and since they are pre-mounted you have no way of truly evaluating them. Most I saw were obviously of low color quality and their lack of brillance was a sure indicator of bad cut, etc. In addition, all the designs just really were in poor taste and didn't work with her engagement ring (she wears a simple solitaire). Keep in mind that, even at Tiffany's, the cost of wedding bands are typically far less than engagement rings (in our case not even 20%). With this perspective it was a no-branier to get her a top quality Tiffany wedding ring (with the pending wedding there was simply more important things to spend my time on rather than trying to save a few $$s on a relatively inexpensive jewellry). So now, next to her beautiful (quality) engagement ring, she wears a Tiffany wedding band with 11 brilliantly cut stones channel set. Both rings look absolutely fabulous together...while I have piece of mind and enough $$$ left to have taken a romantic 'Luna di Miela'!
