Tiffany&Co Engagement Ring ?
Q.How much do these run? Compared to regular diamond rings, are they twice or three times as expensive? If not Tiffany&Co, what other brands are known for high-quality diamond rings?
A.since you're in SF you should check out Shreve's on Post Street. a far classier outfit than Tiffany's. also try Bailey, Banks, and Biddle. there's one in the SF Shopping Centre (the one with nordstrom's in SF). there's one in Corte Madera too. I think you're right - DeBeers mines and procures diamonds, and then sells them on to jewellers who make the actual rings and whatnot. I *think* you can actually buy just the diamonds from them, and then take them to a jeweller to get them made into whatever you like... which according to some of my friends is a better way of doing things, as then you get exactly what you want and it usually ends up being cheaper than a pre-designed ring with a retail markup. DeBeers is a cartel. They don't sell directly to the consumer (though I read somewhere that they may start doing DeBeers retail stores). Loose diamonds are sold to "site" holders (retail jewelers/distributors). It's a highly secretive, ritualized and political process. It's my understanding that site holders are given a package of diamonds once or twice a year. They accept the stones as is and have no ability to change what's given them. If a jeweler has had a great year, their package will reflect it through larger or higher quality gems. If DeBeers is displeased with someone, it's also reflected in the stones they receive. I'm hardly an expert on this so I could have some of my facts wrong. It's a really fascinating business.
