Solitaire Engagement Ring, Engagement rings ?
Q.My partner and I are planning to get engaged later this year. My girlfriend has suggested that I might wear an engagement ring. We would like to know if men can wear engagement rings and if so what general style should the ring be in?
A.Whether or not you wear an engagement ring is totally up to the two of you, and just as her ring can be any style you two choose, so can yours be. My husband and I have matching engagement rings, but that's just what we chose. There aren't any rules here, and even the diamond solitaire engagement ring for women isn't a very old tradition at all. I really like the idea of both partners wearing engagement rings! Kudos to Europeans for figuring that one out. This American feminist is smiling. As for how much to spend on engagement rings, find something you like and that you think your partner will like, maybe go shopping together and see what she likes (if it's a surprise just stroll through a jewelry store with some lame excuse like you want a new watch or your mom's birthday is coming up and you know she wants a new watch or WHATEVER) and if she is remotely like most women she'll point out some styles that she likes. Then you can go back and ask about prices. I would guess that more than $1000 would be excessive for your budget unless you are loaded. If it were me, I would spend $100-200 cause you can get a simple gold band with a stone in it for that. (I bought a promise ring for my (now ex)boyfriend once and it cost $80, so an engagement should probably cost more but not by much.) Who says it has to be diamond? To heck with DeBeers and their recommendations on price and quality. Save the diamonds for the wedding rings -- those are the ones you'll be wearing forever!! And you can shop for those together and make sure they're exactly what you want.
