Solitaire Diamond Ring Setting, Q re: engagement ring ?Q.hi there! I was wondering what all you women with diamond engagement rings "do" with it. My sister used to always take hers off for many things: washing dishes, taking shower, sleeping, etc. I always keep mine on for anything, unless I'm doing something icky. I'm wondering if I could damage it with the elements--like running water. On the other hand, I'm afraid I'd misplace it if I always removed it. Any thoughts? A.I've been wearing mine for a year and a half and only take it off for painting (I do a lot of that at work because I make signs!) and when I put on hand lotion because if I don't the lotion gets under the diamond and looks yucky. Somebody told me that dish detergent and shampoo actually help keep it shiny! I take my ring off at night (I can feel it on my finger and it keeps me awake, silly I know). I also don't put it back on until after I shower. Throughout the day I wear it, but when washing dishes etc usually wear gloves. I've heard the diamond shouldn't be affected by all this, but I'm paranoid - maybe that's cause I've only been wearing it a few months? But I've always been like this with all my jewelry (eg I have a plain rolling ring that I wear on my right hand, and it's always off at night or when I'm cooking). The other reason I am paranoid is that I've known a few people whose diamond has fallen out - usually due to lack of cleaning the setting, and grit developed loosening the diamond. Still, I always worry about that when I'm doing things - am I going to get junk underneath it? (My setting is well set into the ring, so not likely, but still possible). I'm actually more worried about banging it against something and chipping it. However, all 4 of my sisters never take their diamond off -except the one whose diamond fell out. Diamonds are "grease magnets" so hand lotion will end up adhering to the stone and making it look dull. My jeweler recommends using a very soft toothbrush and soapy water to clean it up occasionally. You don't mention what kind of setting you have, but be aware that chlorine and other bleach will pit gold so you shouldn't wear a gold setting if you swim regularly. As for chipping the diamond, the stone in my engagement ring has been in my family (and worn fairly continuously in various settings) for over 100 years. I myself have worn it for the past 20 years almost daily. Yes, the stone does have a couple of scratches and there is a small chip at the edge of one of the facets. I know this because my jeweler told me at the time we had it reset. These flaws cannot be seen by the naked eye. I'm currently taking my "new" ring off when I shower, and wearing gloves to do the dishes.
