Q.Does one need to declare importation of silver jewelry, Is there a recognized-legal agency who certifies the amount of silver in jewelry, trusted by jewelers in the US Are there requirements to use them before selling moon jewelry here?
A.It's strange, how our lives can sometimes be intertwined, and sometimes running parallel, and yet may be running on a collision course, all the same. Let's not let that happen. Silver Jewelry, is a generic term, it tells you little about me or my work, what separates it from the work of many others, how it is that it can be very much the same as the work of many others, and still be mine, the work of my hands. That should tell you that if you find me asleep or eating at, on, or under my bench, you have caught me at a very busy time. That is not the same as offering finished jewelry, imported from Bali, for sale. Again, as I said, I am from the U.S.A., and yes I have a problem with people who import finished jewelry without making the effort to see to it that American made jewelry goes the other direction. After all, importing and exporting walk easily hand-in-hand. They involve making the same sorts of contacts and doing the same sort of paperwork. But as regards what are called Bali Beads, if anyone has right, rhyme or reason to complain of them, it should be my counterparts in Yemen. For much of what are called Bali beads are reproductions of work known to have been done in Yemen by Yemenite jewelry makers.
