sapphire engagement rings ?
Q.My fiance and I are considering buying a sapphire ring with diamonds around it instead of a traditional diamond. Can anyone tell me whether sapphire are graded in the same way as diamonds? Does anyone have any experience with buying colored gemstones for an engagement ring?
A.I don't know how they're graded as far as perfection and clarity goes, but sizes seem to be the same (I have a 1/3 carat Montana Yogo Sapphire solitare set in white gold). Check out the many different colors and see how they look with different metals. As for the rest, I leave that to any professionals we may have out there... Sapphires don't appear to have a grading system; they appear to be priced on the same sorts of things diamonds are -- cut, carat, etc., but with a real emphasis on color. You can get a huge sapphire for cheap if you are willing to settle on the color issue, as a web search will show; if not, it can run about half the price of a quality diamond of similar size. Kia's engagement ring was just sapphires, a large one with two smaller ones surrounding it, with no diamonds at all. I was a little concerned going non-traditional briefly, but once we bought the ring, we started to see newspaper clips involving sapphire rings all the time: Princess Di's engagement ring was a huge sapphire surrounded by smaller diamonds, and Jenny McCarthy's manager just gave her a sapphire-only ring, though that hasn't been called an engagement ring yet. (Obligatory vent: the whole grading system for diamonds is bogus. There's this veneer of objectivity, but it's entirely thrown off by the fact that one of the elements is the entirely subjective "quality of cut." I found jewelry-buying almost as unpleasant as car-buying.)
