Jewelry Q & A

elp: Earrings too painful to wear!

Q.I am wondering if anyone has ever had this problem. In my experience, jewelry stores do not accept returns on earrings- I don't know if this is a widespread policy or what but anyway... I received a pair of hoop diamond baquette earrings as a gift last week. I can't think of what style you'd name to describe the way the earrings "latch", but these are small hoop-style, and they do not have a screw-on back- it's the kind where there's a hinge and it comes up and clasps ontp the back of the earring so that when they're on, they are a complete circle...argh, what do you call this? I know that's a bad, bad description...this is pretty common style. I have several pairs that hook this way instead of having a separate back, but here's the problem: they don't just latch, the back will keep pressing all the way to the back of the earlobe...it's very tight...VERY tight. It causes the earrings to pinch with pressure on both sides of the earlobe...after 2 minutes of wearing them, my ears have marks in the shape of the earring, and I start to get a headache. It's that painful! I tried to wear them to work and kept them on for about an hour...by that time my ears were swollen and so painful I had problems getting them off, because they are so tight they cut into my ears and to get them off you have to pry, literally.I thought about having a jeweler look at them so see if they could be loosen, but with the design I don't see how........I have also though about having the hinge taken off and replaced with a regular, separate back, but that wouldn't look as good for the style. These are real diamond, and therefore not inexpensive earrings. I have NEVER had earrings that are so agonizingly painful to wear! They bring tears to my eyes instantly. has anyone else had this problem, and what did you do- replace the back to a different back style? Or could they just make it where it doesn't close all the way to the earlobe........again it's hard to describe, but it is "springy"---it closes as far as it can push into your skin.I don't want to offend the gift giver and they are beautiful earrings but I simply canNOT wear them- they'd make my ears bleed! (by the way........someone told me I'm just complaining because I don't like them or that they are just a bit uncomfortable.... I had her try them on and she was in agreement....very painful!)........can they be fixed?

A.I gave my mother a pair of small, hinged hoops a few years ago. She, too, had other pairs of the same style without any problems. But these were especially tight in the same way you describe. The open space between front and back when they were snapped closed was too tight of the thickness of her lobes. (She does not have thick lobes!) The jeweler took them back and gave me full credit for them. Because of the design of hinged hoops, I would NOT want to have them adjusted/bent to fit. You should be able to find a similar earring with greater clearance between the front and back. (I would ask the jeweler to find some if he doesn't have any in stock.) It sounds like a swell gift, but I'm sure the giver intended for you to enjoy them.
