Jewelry Q & A

Radiant Cut Diamond Engagement Ring, How did you shop for your engagement ring?

Q.I figured this would be the place to ask for advice on shopping for an engagement ring. Any advice would help and would be much much appreciated!! I'm especially interested to know HOW and WHERE people picked out their rings. Did you get them a jewelers, wholesale markets, through contacts in the industry, or online???? Do you have any advice or recommendations as to how to find one that you like? I really like designer ones like Tiffany's and Cartier, but are they not worth the price??

A.I did it all ONLINE, believe it or not. You have to learn about diamonds first, and you have to know what you're looking for, but I bought a diamond & setting seperately, and ended up getting a ring that apparaised for $4200 for $2000. Best deal I ever made. If you want a recommendation, let me know- they don't really have a "website", other than to search for diamonds. To get a ring you have to call, tell them what you want, maybe send them a pic of what you're looking for, and they will try to match it. The diamonds are certified, and they are honest people with excellent service. S.., I don't know where you live but my advice is to go to the oldest best most well-regarded jewellry store in your city. When we were shopping for my wedding ring, I went to many many places in town that sold rings and saw many inferior diamonds. The old line jewellry store where we eventually bought it had better prices than the national chains; it had great service; and the diamonds in my ring are first rate. I highly recommend the book, "How to Buy a Diamond: Insider Secrets for Getting Your Money's Worth" by Fred Cuellar. The book assumes no prior knowledge of diamonds and explains how to determine cut, color, and clarity. It also has a price table covering how much a diamond should cost based on carat, color, and clarity. Whatever you do, don't buy your engagement ring from a jewlery store in a mall. They really rip people off and if you shop around at other jewlery stores you'll see that.
