Princess Cut Engagement Ring?

Q.Has anyone here bought an engagement ring from Tiffanys? Are they seriously overpriced or just pricey? I've always been a sucker for brand names and hate the idea that I might be taken advantage of by dishonest diamond wholesalers or diamond district carneys. I've already read the engagement ring faq, and several web pages on rings and diamonds. I really need info on Tiffanys only. There's a 1.0 carat, F clarity, VVS2, emerald cut (beautiful) with two sapphires in platinum. Tiffanys wants $13,000. Is it worth it? What's their markup?

A.My limited experience has been that Tiffany's is pricey. A large part of it is the name, but they don't sell stones below certain standards (I believe that includes D color and VS1 clarity, not sure about the other C's). You might ask about the quality of the sapphires as well. I would shop around more though. We ended up with an emerald cut diamond, slightly larger and not too far off in color and clarity (G and VVS2) with .5 carat of diamonds on the sides for less than half of what you're being quoted at Tiffany's. If you know what you're looking for and have an idea of what the 4 c's really mean, you can do better on the price. I bought an engagement ring from Tiffany's and was delighted with the ring, the price, and the service. My fiancee is likewise thrilled. You will pay a lot for the ring, but the ring will actually be worth what you pay. It's just a question of whether you want to (and have the resources to) invest $10,000 and up on a ring. You can get similarly sized diamonds elsewhere for much less-- but not of comparable color and quality. You should get Tiffany's free booklet and video on how to buy a diamond. It does a good job of describing the difference you get from a Tiffany diamond. Then you can decide whether it's worth it for you. I'm hearing a lot of people talk about round diamonds. We haven't purchased my ring yet, but I am extremely interested in an oval cut diamond (at least a carat) set in a platinum band. Will an oval cut cost more than a round cut because it's not as popular? My best friend wanted a princess cut all her life, but just got engaged and her fiance bought her an oval. He said it was much more brillant. It is beautiful too. He also looked at round and said the prices were similar, but oval was closer to princess, which she originally wanted. if you have a piece of garbage round stone and a top quality princess both of the same weight, the princess will be more expensive. Never once did we come across a princess (same quality) that was more expensive than a round stone. You contridicted yourself - you say that a brilliant has more facets and then you say that a princess is more difficult to cut -- it doesn't add up. Plain and simple - my point was: in this area, if you put 2 stones of identical quality next to each other (one a brilliant and one a princess) the brilliant will ALWAYS be more expensive.
