Jewelry Q & A

What Does Your Ring Look Like?

Q.What does your engagement ring look like? Is it elaborate or simple? Did you pick it out or did he? If he did, is the perfect ring or would you have picked something different? If so, what? What do you plan to get (or have gotten) for you wedding band to go with it? Is it a set? Will they match? What does he plan to get? Does you ring(s) fit your lifestyle, personality, or both? (or not?)

A.I'll answer first. My engagement ring is a solitaire, brilliant cut 1 ct. diamond. It is in a tiffany setting (very simple). My husband picked it out. It is absolutely perfect!! I only told him I wanted a round stone, but he probably would have gotten that for me anyway because that is what he likes too. He is an engineer, so I knew it would be of good quality, but I didn't expect such a large stone. I was shocked when I got it because we were both still in college, so we didn't have much money. Plus, he asked me to marry him much sooner than I expected too!! I have a plain 4 mm gold wedding band (comfort fit -- recommended). The two rings are soldered together (which I highly recommend). I am a simple person and don't like many frills. I wanted something of quality, very simple, yet beautiful, which is what I got. I did not want to detract from my beautiful stone with an elaborate wedding band, so I knew all along that I wanted a plain band. He was going to get something a little more elaborate, but he ended up getting the exact same ring as me. I would say that my rings fit my personality more so than my lifestyle. I am very active, but my ring is not a result of that. His ring probably fits both his personality and lifestyle because he works on the car a lot. That is it on our rings. I agree. I actually believe that the color makes all the difference in the appearance, even more than the clarity. My husband looked at many loose diamonds in the sunlight and determined the same thing. Therefore, he got me a diamond with VERY good color and fairly good clarity (it is hard to get good clarity the bigger the diamond). So, mine is very sparkly too. If I had a choice, I would choose color, then clarity as well. I was just fortunate enough to get it all, I guess. My hands are quite small, so I thought the diamond would look too big, but it really doesn't. So you don't lose it, make sure it fits perfectly. I got my sized to the 1/4 size. Also, just don't ever take it off. If you do, have a special place you keep it. I never take mine off except to clean it (which is in the morning when I'm spraying hairspray, putting mousse in my hair, and putting on lotion). I just throw my ring in my sonic cleaner. It does a great job with no scrubbing!
