Pink Sapphire Engagement Ring?Q.My fiance and I had talked about getting married and we went to several jewelry stores together to LOOK at rings. This way he knew what types of rings I liked but I still got to be surprised when I finally got it. It was a COMPLETE surprise. I knew Terry had picked out a ring and that he was making payments on it, but I had no idea when he was going to propose (or exactly what the ring looked like). We went to Boston for the weekend to visit some really good friends (I later found out that they were in on it). We arrived friday night. Saturday we went to Quincy Market and had lunch. We walked around the market for alittle while before our friend John had to go to work (he works at a restaurant near the market. Anyway we were standing right in front of the market and Terry and I were telling our friends how the very frist time we went away it was to Boston and we had our picture taken right in that very spot. Well my friend Heather just happened to have a camera - dah! (sometimes I am so clueless). She took our picture and then Terry got down on his knee and said "I found something. Do you want It? (he held out the box) Will you marry me?" (our friends snapping pictures the entire time) I was speechless!! I was so surprised. Every time I think about it, I get teary-eyed. When I finally did get to see the ring (after tons of tissues) it was gorgeous! Terry designed it himself and it's exactly what I wanted. A.K.. and I have been together for about 2 years and 2 months now, and we became 'engaged' this last May, on her graduation day from Juniata here. (I say 'engaged', because we had known for a long time that we were going to get married, and this just made it official to the rest of the world. :) ) What we did about the ring was this. One day last year, we decided to go by some of the jewelers at the local mall, so that we could look over the rings. This way, I could get an idea of the style that Kim liked, but she wouldn't know just what ring it would be. (Also, she wouldn't know when she would get it, but that's another story. I'll have to post "How I Asked Her" sometime...) This worked out _very_ well for us; she loved the ring I got (which actually was one of those engagement/wedding ring sets--very nice, cause then after the marriage they fit together well.) for her. So I'd suggest the two people go together and look over styles, stone shapes, etc. Also, Todd, I'm one of those younger men too. :) By a year and 8 months. Which means I'm still here in college, while she's out in the real world. (I'd say I got the better bargain. ;) ) That's one of the reasons we don't have a date yet; we're going to wait till I'm out of school, and our lives have settled down slightly. Can you imagine how much trouble that causes, when the first thing people ask after finding out that you're engaged is "When's the date?" ?!?!?!? :) Whew, a bit of release there... I am having a discussion with a friend about whether or not your SO should pick out her own engagement ring. I am believe that outside of hinting (or outright telling) of what type of stone (round, oval, etc) she wants, she should not be part of the engagement ring purchasing process, and that the whole "engagement experience" should be a total surprise. My girlfriend agrees with this. She told me round stone, but doesn't want to know about anything else. She wants it to be a total surprise. My friend believes that it is not imperative for a ring to be purchased prior to asking your SO to marry you. He feels that it is either (a) ok to ask and then have his SO pick out her own ring, or (b) just take his SO to the jewelry store and pick out her own ring as part of the asking process.
