Jewelry Q & A

Pear Shaped Diamond Engagement Ring?

Q.I need some advice about wedding rings and I was hoping that some of you would have some input. Mike gave me a 1/2 carat pear-shaped diamond engagement ring. It was an earring that belonged to his mother. When the diamond was made into the ring, they left it in it's original earring setting so the diamond sits flush against my finger. The band is also very thin... which is good because I have extremely small fingers (a size 4) and I didn't want the ring to look too big. The problem is that a traditional wedding band is not going to work with this diamond because it would not sit flush against the band of the engagement ring. I have been looking at diamond wraps, but they all seem to be made for round or marquise style diamonds.. no pear-shaped ones. Does anyone else have a pear-shaped diamond?

A.I don't have a pear shaped diamond, but I think you could get a wrap made for differently shaped diamonds. The first response to your newsgroup post was accurate. Most women move their engagement ring to their right hand after marriage, and wear a wedding band on their left hand. In my wife's case I had a set made specifically around the center stone (a marquise). She choose the cut, I did the rest. Not to get off the subject, but her engagement ring simply has two tapered baguettes flanking the center stone. The jacket ring cradles the engagement mounting and has tapered baguettes cascading in a marquise shape around the engagement ring. Not too ostentatious. Back to the subject at hand. Yes, we have pear shape jacket rings available, if that is what you choose. Though I wonder, how low the center stone is set in your engagement ring. Do you by chance have a picture you could email us? Are you set with the idea of wearing a jacket ring around the engagement mounting or are you open to other ideas? Talk to your jeweler. They can notch the wedding band to make it fit with your engagement ring. They usually have to do this anyway if they are to be soldered togehter. I have a tiffany setting, and one of my prongs was notched at the bottom to allow the ring to be flush against the engagement ring. Have you considered having the diamond set differently? I would consider that too. There are settings that don't stick up too far. I also have small fingers, so I know what you mean. You will get used to it, though
