Jewelry Q & A

Pear Cut Diamond Pendant

Q.My 10th anninversary is approaching and I am looking to buy a diamond anninversary ring for my wife. However, I don't know if I'm getting a good deal or if I'm getting ripped off. What should I look for when I am shopping for the ring? Should the diamonds sparkle? How about channel rings? Does anyone have any experience with the chains - Gordons, Littmans, or Zales?

A.These things (among others, I'm sure) affect a diamond's price: The most popular cut is the brilliant cut (the traditional round shape). There are also pears, hearts, ovals, squares, etc. You could have a diamond cut in the shape of a dog's head if you wanted to. The round cut tends to get the most gitter from the diamond. The most precisely cut diamonds are from the USSR. Most diamonds you'll see are cut in Israel. Diamonds are graded on a color scale. The more colorless diamonds are rarer, more desirable, and more expensive. Diamonds are also graded by the number of imperfections (or inclusions) that occur within them. Flaws that you can see with the naked eye tend to reduce the glitter markedly. Most diamonds will feature some flaws that you can see only with a magnifier. Be wary of carbon flaws on the crystaline axis: these may cause a diamond to fracture. Carats - The bigger, the more expensive (all other things being equal). "I", in relation to diamond grading means *imperfection* - not included. I've been watching this discussion a while, and now, since I've opened my keyboard, I may as well toss in my $.02. Don't discount the mall stores for stones either. Nearly all of them keep some collections of loose stones - many will even display them - but you generally have to ask to see loose stones. For some reason, it's been my experience that loose stones are generally kept in the safe and not the display case - I don't know why. The malls are generally higher - they have higher rent payments as a rule, but if you want that *one particular stone and quality* you take it where you can get it.
