Jewelry Q & A

Oval Diamond Ring, question about setting diamonds into a ring ?

Q.Okay here's the thing: I bought a .25 carat diamond ring at an auction raising money for stray animals. I also have my mothers engagement ring that my father gave her which is also a .25 carat ring. Both diamonds are already set in the ring. I really want an oval shaped diamond of around .75 carats. There is a jewelry mart here in San Francisco where you can buy diamonds unmounted and have them mounted into a setting. Is it possible to buy the oval diamond that I want there.... then take the other 2 rings and have the diamonds removed....and reset into a platinum setting with the oval diamond in the middle and the two .25 diamonds as side stones? I think it would look great. Just wondering how that would work with removing the other diamonds from the orginial setting. How much would it cost? Would it damage the diamonds? Also, I'm sure that all of the diamonds aren't going to be the exact same clarity and color...is that a huge problem? The two diamonds I have look quite similiar. Anyone with information on this I would love to hear it!

A.I'm no expert, but I learned a lot about diamonds when shopping for my fiancee's diamond ring. I don't think there's any question that you can have the 3 stones put into a single ring. As far as cost goes, if you buy a .75 ct ring and platinum band from a jeweler, the jeweler should set the 3 stones for no charge. I bought my stone from one jeweler, and the band from another. There was no charge to set the stone. Any jeweler can set stones properly, so you have other options than the jewelry mart . I do think, however, that if the stones are different in color, then the ring will not look too good. I'm certain that any jeweler would agree. Finally, ask around at the local jewelry stores. They are more than happy to give out free advice. (And are much more qualified than me!) Just a side note: If you don't know you're jeweler very well, or if they do not have a stellar reputation, see if you can "observe" them setting the stones in whatever setting you get. And don't leave the stones with them (unless you trust them 100%). While the majority of jewelers are honest, hard-working people (99.99% of them), there are a few bad seeds out there. Our local news ran a story a while ago about some crooked jewelers in the area, who had dones things such as switch stones (replacing your higher quality diamond with a lower quality), or selling stones that had been drilled (to remove flaws) without telling the customer (which is illegal also).
