Jewelry Q & A

Non-diamond engagement ring?

Q.I just wanted to get some opinions on a non-diamond engagement ring. I am not a big fan of mafia organizations, and DeBeers is one the worst. Its amazing to me that they managed to not only kill the rest of the diamond miners in South Africa, but now have engineered society so that you're expected to hand them 2 months of your salary. I don't have a problem with buying an expensive ring for my fiancee, but I would like to buy her an emerald instead (it would match her eyes a million times better). I find the beauty of a fine emerald stone to be un-paralleled, and would much prefer this as a symbol of my love for her. Is there any sort of modern society protocol for an _emerald_ engagement ring?

A.I've never heard this, but if you believe it to be true, there are PLENTY of other jewelers who sell diamonds. The only suggestion I have for you is this. You really should talk w/your fiancee about this. SHE is the one who will be wearing this ring for everyday for the rest of her life. I know I really had my heart set on a diamond, and may have reacted strangely if my FI had proposed w/another stone. Emerald's are also a lot harder to care for. Just my 2 cents. Wow, you should definitely at least be aware of the type of influences being held over you. DeBeers has proven to be one of the most subtle, time-enduring monopolies of all time. When the huge diamond mines where first discovered in South Africa, DeBeers employed gorilla warfare tactics to gain control of the mines. In South Africa, there was no government installed to oppose this type of action. After they gained control of the mines, they then controled well over 90% of the world's diamond supply. After an absolutly brilliant advertising blitz in the 1930's, it became social standard for engagement stones to be diamonds (it was exactly opposite this way before that), and today nobody questions that social standard. To this day, jewelers go to DeBeers and say "How much can we pay for your diamonds?" ... DeBeers can do this because they own all the diamonds. Have no doubt about it, there are lots of jewerls selling jewelery, but all their diamonds come form DeBeers. (An interesting side note here, is the rise of the diamond tennis bracelet... a few years ago DeBeers hit some mines filled with tiny diamonds. What could DeBeers do with these seemingly worthless rocks? Answer: Place a lot of them together in a bracelet and make people think it customary to give them on an aniversary).
