Marquis Diamond Engagement Ring?Q.I just wanted to get some opinions on a non-diamond engagement ring. I am not a big fan of mafia organizations, and DeBeers is one the worst. Its amazing to me that they managed to not only kill the rest of the diamond miners in South Africa, but now have engineered society so that you're expected to hand them 2 months of your salary. I don't have a problem with buying an expensive ring for my fiancee, but I would like to buy her an emerald instead (it would match her eyes a million times better). I find the beauty of a fine emerald stone to be un-paralleled, and would much prefer this as a symbol of my love for her. Is there any sort of modern society protocol for an _emerald_ engagement ring? A.I've never heard this, but if you believe it to be true, there are PLENTY of other jewelers who sell diamonds. The only suggestion I have for you is this. You really should talk w/your fiancee about this. SHE is the one who will be wearing this ring for everyday for the rest of her life. I know I really had my heart set on a diamond, and may have reacted strangely if my FI had proposed w/another stone. Emerald's are also a lot harder to care for. Just my 2 cents. I love my diamond, but would have loved an emerald just as much as it is my birthstone. I still have my diamond ring, but if I could've avoided De Beers, I would have. However, it is nearly impossible to get a non-De Beers diamond. I think an emerald can make a great engagement ring. That's what my mother has! I would, as so many others have mentioned, talk with your fiance before you buy one, though. If your fiance wants to wear this ring all the time for the rest of her life, then an emerald may not be the most pratical stone. As my mother was driving across country shortly after she and my father got married, she looked at her ring and a quarter of her emerald was GONE! Emeralds are extremely brittle, and she hit the ring and broke the stone. Just something to be aware of! If you want emerald-green but not an emerable, there are other stone that can be just as brilliant a green: sapphires (my mother has another ring with a green sapphire that is almost the same shade as her emerald, striking), tourmalines, and tvorsite garnets (sp? -- not sure on the name of the last, but when I was shopping bor myh finace's engagment gift I found a beautiful example of the garnet that was a grren-blue color, really neat!) Congratulations on your engagement! And good luck with your fiance's ring!
