Q.I saw a program about the diamonds few months back. The interesting thing was that the "requirement" for a diamond engagement ring and that it must cost a certain percentage of your salary was created solely by Debeer's marketing spin in the late 1920s. Previously diamonds were not associated with engagements and their price was less. The show described how Debeers was able to obtain control of all aspects from mining thru wholesale in that period. Apparantly more people have recognized how contrived diamond "value" is and that is the reason Debeers is doing all of the current marketing which is a rehash of their original 1920s marketing exclaiming why we need to buy diamonds and that we need to spend a certain percentage of our income to show we really care.
A.Supply and demand has little to do with it, as a monopoly they set all of the rules. When you are ordered to come and you have to buy what ever they give you, how it that supply and demand? You option is pay it or go out of business. And as for the bad stones they mix in, as a consumer, if you found out that a company was deliberately mixing spoiled eggs in with the good, just to pass the loss of to you, man would you complain. Sure a mine gets all different grades, however DeBeers also sells industrial diamonds, so they do have an avenue to get rid of them, they just prefer to cheat the sight holders. So now she knows his love is true I think the current custom of using diamonds in engagement rings only goes back to the 1930's and is largely the result of a hugely successful advertising campaign. Now "right-hand" diamond rings are being pushed on the public. If you're single and "deserve" a diamond, you should buy one for yourself.
