Loose Round Cut Diamonds

Q.I'm thinking of buying a round, brilliant cut diamond. At the same time, the heart-shape appeals to me too (probably because I was born on valentine's day). I think the heart-shape is pretty, but fear its too cutesy or ticky-tacky and I'd tire of it, and that in the long-run I'd be happier with a more classic cut. So right now I'm leaning toward the round, brilliant cut diamond (and maybe one of these days will buy a heart-shaped amethyst, which is my birthstone). Any thoughts on heart-shaped diamonds?

A.I don't know about "cutsie" but the optical properties of a diamond are maximized by a well cut round as no other cut can. If you're looking for the liveliest and most beautiful cut it's the round which should be yer choice... HeartShapes are really nice, but by comparision the round brilliant stone can't be beat... Maintain approx 60% depth & 60% table and you will be well on your way towards a benchmark beautiful stone... I'd agree with your choice, Peggy. In addition to the stone itself having all those built in emotional ties when it's a heart shape, the jewelry design itself gets pretty limited. With a round or other simple geometric shape, you have a great deal of design freedom that you simply can't find with the heart shape. The round stone can become a graphic element in a design, complimenting and complimented by, the design of the mounting. With a heart shape diamond, much of the design statement has already been made. You can embelish it and add to it, but you can't vary the basic emotional message by very much. In addition, going with a larger, heart shaped colored stone like an amethyst, gives you the option of using considerably larger stones at modest cost, showing off the heart outline to good advantage. These may also work better than a smaller stone in a simple mounting so the heart shows off as what it is, without then looking too small or trivial as a whole piece of jewelry.
