Jewelry Q & A

Loose Heart Diamond

Q.The marquise is set in white gold - when I asked the jeweler they said it was too hard to set marquises in platinum without the risk of breaking the tip of the diamond. Does this sound weird? The white gold under the diamond does have a yellow tinge, especially since it's right next to the platinum. Is it elaborate or simple?

A.You are right, but there are so many good cuts. My husband took mine out in the sunlight to see which one sparkled the most. It was not the cut necessarily, but the color as well. He looked at loose diamonds, not diamonds in rings. He did not like any of the diamonds they had already set, so they let him look at the many many loose diamonds they had. The conclusion he came to was that color was the thing that made the most difference to the naked eye. He chose the diamond that was the most perfect in color that he could afford. I agree on this one (unless you count carat -- I don't consider that very important. The only thing it affects is the price!!). You can tell more difference in clarity the larger the diamond. This is reflected greatly in the price. It is much harder to get a larger diamond with better clarity than it is to get a smaller diamond, so the price is proportionately higher for this reason. I do not agree here. I do agree that color is most important, but I do not agree about the yellow gold. My diamond is a little over a carat, and it has E color. It is in a tiffany setting on a yellow gold band. The setting is a six-prong platinum setting, and the gold band is so thin, you do not see the yellow gold through the diamond because you see the setting. Besides, so what if you could? Is that so bad? Most tiffany settings have extremely thin bands, and the setting is either platinum or white gold. That is what will show through the diamond, not the band. That diamond sounds about like mine. Mine is beautiful!! It was very expensive (much more than I would spend or any of my friends would spend). We were both in college when we got engaged, so I did not expect such a large diamond, especially not one with such good quality. I disagree with the fact that size matters. I think most girls here would agree that they would rather have the quality, rather than the size. I wouldn't have minded a smaller diamond with the same quality or better. I love my diamond, and I'm glad he did not sacrifice quality for size. I would NEVER want him to do that ever!! You are right that the clarity really doesn't matter that much. It does matter more on larger diamonds, but they are so much more expensive. If you up the clarity even by one on a 1 ct. diamond, you are looking at a couple thousand dollars!! If you up the color, you are looking at a whole lot more (like AT LEAST $5000 more!!). My old college roommate worked at a jewelry store -- that is how I know all these details. If the diamond is smaller, the price difference is not near as much. I would go for color over clarity, but I would not go for size over the two of those. This is just a female's opinion, which I think would be more valuable than a guy's. Actually, I do not represent all females. I have to admit, some girls DO want bigger. My old roommate's mother had a 3 ct diamond. It was the ugliest thing I had ever seen, but it was big. It was far from colorless, and it was just gaudy as far as I am concerned. BUT -- most do not care that much about the size. You should know your woman and what she wants. You should be able to choose the perfect diamond.
