Perfect diamond.Q.I saw a report on Dateline the other night about a lab that makes perfect diamonds. It's a surprise to me that this is new; I thought they had been making man-made perfect diamonds for years. Does anyone have any info on this? Does anyone know if they are available yet? If not, when? A.Chatham apparently announced a joint venture with a Russian firm to manufacture synthetic diamonds, but the plan was put on hold indefinitely because they can't get past yellow (i.e., they can make them very "clean" -- without inclusions, but they can't make them "white", at least not yet). Apparently this is the same problem that G.E. and the Japanese are having. It is also not cheap. It is much, much more difficult to make a diamond then corundum (ruby/sapphire), and requires very expensive equipment. Apparently it is more cost effective for G.E. to crank out a few carats of industrial grade diamond grit every 30 seconds or so, then it is to tie-up the same press for the longer time (I read approx 1 week per carat) to grow a gem quality stone. The latest vintage of Russian material is magnetic and therefore, in loose stones, can be readily detected via their magnetic properties. Plans for a relatively simple detection device are currently being implemented. The incentive to develop laboratory grown (synthetic) diamonds is significant.
