Origin of "tennis bracelet".
Q.Just a piece of trivia that I've been pondering .... Can anyone enlighten me to the origin of the phrase "tennis bracelet"? Why is it called that?
A.In the early eighties (don't recall exactly when), Due to DeBeers marketing arrangements with the russians, I think, they were ending up with a surplus of smaller diamonds in the .10 to .20 range. As is their way when they wish to increase the market for some flavor of diamonds, they created yet another marketing plan, devised around the format of the now familier bracelets, which I think were probably originally thought of as a neat larger version of the "eternity" ring (which they also had a big role in popularizing). As part of that media advertising campaign, a certain young and famous tennis player found herself the recipient of a complementary diamond bracelet, part of some endorsement deal or other, which of course required her to wear said bracelet as much as possible in public. So Chris Evert, the lady involved, did exactly that, and her fans loved it. The bracelets started selling like hotcake as everyone dreamed that if they too had one, they could be as cool as Chris Evert, though I don't quite think anyone thought the things would improve their tennis game. Anyway, Debeers found itself happily filling orders for a greatly increased market for those sizes of diamonds, and the bracelets have been called tennis bracelets ever since. A famous tennis player (I think it was Billy Jean King), kept losing her diamond on the tennis court. So she asked a jeweler to create a bracelet for her that she could wear on the court, during play. Thus became the "tennis bracelet".
