The information about pure silver watchQ.My wife has a nickel allergy and can't wear most "cheap" watches. She would like a watch for her birthday, and referred me to the "Simply Whispers" web site. Well, I would rather get her a nice quality watch. I have been eyeing an $800 Cyma watch. It is not solid gold (those are in the thousands of dollars), but it does have a thick (10 micron) 18K gold plating. Is that thick enough to protect her from any possible nickel that may be contained in the base metal? I'd hate to spend $800 on a watch, only to find out she won't wear it! Does anyone with a nickel allergy have any experience with "quality" gold plating? A.As a suggestion what about a watch with a solid silver case? Sterling Silver is an alloy of copper 7.5% and Silver 92.5% so it does not have any Nickel in it and silver is much much cheaper than gold. I think silver is bio-neutral as I used to mend some pure silver medical tools belonging to a local surgeon and he told me that he used these because it did not cause the body to react. It is very difficult to find a new silver watch but it is possible to find lovely Art Deco 1920's and 30's watches often with pretty enamelled dials and semi-precious stones in the antique markets. These are usually very cheap. What about buying one of those and then spending some money having it completely overhauled by a watchmaker.
