Heart Shape Diamond Ring, A Diamond Is For What?Q.Many jewelers will do that actually - you pick a stone, and they'll just put it in a cheap, simple setting. That way the guy has something to give the girl, but she can still pick the setting she wants. The thing I always wondered about guys who buy the ring ahead is how they figure out what ring size their girlfriend is. I didn't even know mine until we went to get the ring. A.I've heard you mention this before, but never commented on how cool I thought it was. I'm currently sitting here worrying about where I'm going to find these thousands of dollars I'm apparently supposed to spend on my girlfriend's engagement ring when we both really have bigger things to worry about. It's not that she cares that much, but it's hard when you literally overhear her friends fretting about the size of the diamond and how much it'll cost. I'm this (holding fingers an 1/8 inch apart) close to telling everyone that's concerning themselves with it to fuck off. That said, most of the women around AFCA are pretty cool about this, but I must admit, it really sucks being in this position. I've already told her I'm perfectly willing to hand over the keys to my little car that she's loved for years, the one I planned on keeping forever myself, but I get the impression everyone will just think I'm a big ass if I do that and just get her a modest ring. Yes, this can be a problem with some peeps, and others' attitude can grate even if it's not that big of a deal to the pair of you, because they can turn it in to a big deal with the sniping, or even teasing and good natured jokes if it goes too far or on too long. Mmmm, I would think that yes, "everyone" would take that the wrong way, it would look like you were too attached to the car, and figured you could keep it this way and weasel out of buying a ring. Have a really honest conversation with your girlfriend, and ascertain exactly how much a nice ring means to her. (And it can mean a lot, without her being vacuous or shallow.) If she's cool with it, you have three possibilities. (1) Get engaged without a ring. It's not required, you know. The pair of you can say that you haven't found something suitable yet (true), or that you want to spend your money on other things than a big rock at this point (also true). I know lots of peeps that have done this, particularly those who can't wear jewellery at work, it just doesn't become practical to have a an expensive piece of jewellery that one is seldom able to wear. (2) Get a non-traditional engagement ring. Not neccessarily a $20 one, but a beautiful, classic ring with a high quality gem in it. But get something set with semi-precious (amethyst, topaz, citrine, etc) stones. They can be very beautiful and can be nearly an order of magnitude cheaper than a ring set with precious stones like diamonds, rubies, emeralds or sapphires. Even something with semi-precious in the middle flanked by diamonds can be a lot cheaper and still really nice. Tell anyone interested that the two of you decided you liked something big and colourful rather than something smaller and white (true). Buy her a really really nice dinner or anniversary ring a few years down the road. (3) Get a modest diamond in keeping with both your preferences and budgets, it's the sensible thing to do (true), rather than liquidate treasured assets, or overextend oneself. Be agressive, but nice with friends who make comments about the size. Tell them that you'd both rather have a little ring and drive your little car than hitchike with some big rock (true).
