Jewelry Q & A

Heart Engagement Ring, Who gets the engagement ring? (and "heart balm" laws)

Q."...The Sour-Flower Trading Post on North Main Street is one pawn business in Findlay that usually has a good stock of "used" engagement rings for sale. According to store clerk Ray Stennett, broken-hearted customers frequently come to the Sour-Flower to rid themselves of these former symbols of love. "We do have some men that come in" to sell engagement rings, "but there doesn't seem to be as many men as women. A lot of them come in mad, especially the guys," he said..." I wonder does this mean that the men usually don't get the rings back? Also in this age of so-called gender equality, shouldn't States get rid of the "heart balm" laws referred to??

A.What ever happened to the custom of men receiving a marriage settlement or dowry? After all it's the men who are taking the girl off her family's hands and that's worth a lot. Every culture on earth has always paid the MAN with gifts, property or money to marry the girl. Even to this day the females of Masai tribe have to pay the men in cattle(their medium of exchange) so that the men will shag them when they want to have kids. Absolutely not! Especially since guys are now afforded some protection. An interesting side note is that in California, there is a subsection of the rape statute called "Rape By Deception" Simply put, if the guy says "Of course I'll marry you baby if we do it tonight", and the guy doesn't. He can be prosecuted as if it were a "monster in the park" rape. By those standards, if the girl says yes to the proposal, takes the ring, and says no later, shouldn't that be "theft by deception"? That must have been from a time before good birth control and abortion. Besides even if there was a law on the books like that it doesn't specify when the victim(the man) must marry her. haha erm maybe in 50 years baby lol Girls should not receive any gifts or rings before the wedding and after she has signed a contract agreeing to the man's terms of marriage and the conditions of disolution.
