Jewelry Q & A

Harry Winston Engagement Ring, Proposing marriage - ring selection ?

Q.I hope to propose marriage to my girlfriend over the New Year's holiday in Hawaii. I'd like to surprise her with the marriage proposal and a ring, but that would mean she didn't have any input into the ring selection. What suggestions can any of you offer to keep this a surprise, but insure she gets a ring she likes?

A.See if you can find a jewelry store that she would like. Then buy a ring that _you_ like, and get the jewelry store to agree to either refund the money, or exchange the ring if she doesn't like it. It should be no problem for them to make an exchange, and I would think a reputable store would make a refund (within a short period of time) as long as you haven't made them size the ring or anything like that. The only way to truly ensure that you'll pick a ring she likes is to ask her. Can you take her to a jewelry store and watch her reactions to the things she looks at? Personally, I would have flayed DH if he had bought a ring for me without consulting me about it. Well, I would hope that, since you're planning on marrying her, you have at least a grasp of her general likes and dislikes. As in whether she prefers understated jewelry or if she prefers antique-looking or more flamboyant. Take a look at what she kind of jewelry she wears daily and you should get a good idea as to what type she prefers. Then go find something you think fits in with what she wears a lot. (Of course, Doug's suggestion is a *great* one.) Or, you could go a little 'out of the ordinary' and go with a tradition from your or her heritage, if there is a specific one in your heritage. For instance, my husband is Irish and what he did was to buy a claddagh and present it to me when he asked me to marry him. (In the past, the claddagh could symbolize your marital status. Pointed towards you meant you were taken, pointed away meant you were looking and, IIRC, even the hand you wore it on could signify whether you were married or not.) Then, after I accepted, he offered to take me out looking for a 'real' engagement ring, but I preferred for him to buy it on his own (with just one request for me, gold, not silver. I don't own any silver or silvery jewelry.) Anyway, for a month or two, my claddagh served as my engagement ring.
