Q.Has anyone else noticed the cute little necklace that Brenda's been wearing lately? It's a gold choker with a crystal or diamond right in the middle. I know this is a detail probably overlooked by many but I notice every time I see her and have been looking for one similar without any luck. Any other details that I've missed?
A.Just remember when you're looking at jewelry that there is a 300% markup. Tiffany's probably even adds to that because of their "name." Find a reputable manufacturing jeweler and you can have one for much, much less. Also, the price will vary greatly depending upon the quality and size of the diamond. Haven't you ever wondered why some stores will advertise, for example, a one-carat total weight diamond tennis bracelet for $200, yet another store will have what you might think is the same thing, only the price tag is $1,500? The difference is because of the difference in the quality of the diamonds. You can be fairly confident that Tiffany's isn't going to sell anything with a diamond that has very low quality, which is why their prices would be higher. I do not see tennis bracelets as an investment opportunity. They all look so much alike. Some of the best are CZ! One great diamond solitaire ring outshines a wristful of G-H color SI1 diamonds on a tennis bracelet. Unless of course you own a Harry Winston original, which uses top grade diamonds. My preference is for unique rings, sapphire or emerald bracelets, and platinum, gold, diamond, or sapphire necklaces. Bling bling with taste.
