Jewelry Q & A

Genuine Diamond Tennis Bracelet.

Q.I rarely purchase any on e-Bay, but the other day I saw a gorgeous ring from a company I've been thinking of ordering from. I figured I'd bid on the ring and see an item rather than making a minimum order from the manufacturer. It was advertised as having genuine stones. The company offers a mix of genuine items, and I have no reason to doubt the seller as his description states clearly that the item is genuine. So, I bid. Later, I get to thinking about it and visit the manufacturer's web site. There, I see that this ring's stones are in fact, completely simulated. Upon finding out the seller (a power seller) has fraudulently described the gems, (there are trade laws against this) you can bet I retracted my bid. Unfortunately there is no choice for "seller is a fraud!" I know e-Bay won't take my word against a power seller, but I send a complaint about fraud anyway not even mentioning that I had retracted my bid. Today, I receive a reply from Power Sellers support reprimanding me for retracting (my first in six years!) The form letter tells me I should ask any questions before bidding. Well, if an auction states an item is genuine, why would I think to e-mail and ask if it is a fake? How absurd is that?

A.I did see items today that completely blew my mind. A seller was selling items that I know to be CZs in silver. (They used the company's pics straight off the site.) They were described as genuine diamonds set in white gold in all of the titles and most of the descriptions. A handful of the descriptions clarified "GENUINE created DIAMOND in white GOLD look" (Their punctuation.) Wow! that may be the worst I've seen yet. This is one of the main reasons why jewelry that costs over $29.95 should never be purchased on eBay. I was looking at diamond tennis bracelets and found one that I liked locally for $9,000 from a trusted jeweler and seen a similar, but lesser stated quality, bracelet advertised on eBay for less than half price. I e-mailed the seller with some questions, but never heard back. I guess he really wasn't sure about the authenticity of the one he was selling. I guess it only proves that you can't buy quality or genuine jewelry on some website.
