Jewelry Q & A

"Expensive" Pawn Shop Engagement Ring?

Q.I've been shopping for engagement rings and I'm shocked by the prices; I want to be able to afford a wedding, too! I've seen other posts suggesting pawn shops for inexpensive rings, but has anyone had success with "expensive" rings with stones around 3/4 caret or more? I was looking to spend over $1000 for a ring, but everything I've been interested in at jewelry stores is over $3000 (ouch!) I'd love to hear what you have to say.

A.I bought my fiancées ring at a pawn shop and got an unbelievable price. I got a 2/3 carat with a setting that makes it look like a full carat for $650. The only problem with pawn shops is that you are at the mercy of the stock they have on hand. Which can be limited at times. A couple of tips. First is to always know that the sticker price will ALWAYS come down if you ask. The above mentioned ring was marked $800. Second is that you can also ask and see if they have loose diamonds and set it for you. I guess the danger of buying from a pawn shop would be that you don't really know what you are getting in terms of cut, carat, colour, clarity.. And you may get duped into buying a ring that is not even a diamond. I would be very careful and stick to reputable jewellers. You may have to cut back on size, cut or setting.
