Q.I would respectfuly suggest that you have some of your facts wrong. the 0.03 ct diamond is not a very big one. Another gentlement is selling a 0.3ct diamond ring in this newsgroup for $200, a much more reasonable price for such a ring. also remember that brand NEW jewelry sells for about 1/2 the price of the appraisals (yes, jewelry stores will provide you, at time of purchase, an appraisal for twice the amount of what you paid). So, according to your appraisal of $3,000, someone would be expected to buy this ring, brand new, for about $1,500 in an Ottawa jewelry store. Used, it would be about 1/2 of what it sells new, ie $750. But that sound very expensive for 0 .03ct (even for a VVS2 clarity), and on the high side for a .3ct diamond.
A.If you want to deal with very honest and knowledgable people in the jewellery business, go to Thompson Jewellers on Bank Street. I have dealt with them for years and could not ever say how pleased we've been with their services. I have purchased estate jewellery, new jewellery, and had them restore several articles including time pieces - and have received NOTHING but amazing service every time. They carry some really beautiful estate jewellery - you might be able to get a great diamond - melt down the gold and make a new ring. Doing this will save you a FORTUNE! Expect to save at least 50% off a new ring, and in fact you do get a brand new ring - but you would be smarter in that you saved 50% to get a brand new ring (melted down gold - reformed). They took the time to explain everything to me that I needed to know to make an informed purchasing decision. And they provided lots of options. Anyone else have experience at Thompson's Jewellers on Bank Street (south of Laurier)?
