Diamonds Are Fool's Best Friend
Q.I wear my diamond ring every single day. My husband has a diamond earring that he wears every single day (along with a ruby and sapphire). Why do you think there is no "use" made of these things? Good body art costs more than what I paid for my ring or his earring. I'm with him on this one. I don't "get" the appeal of jewelry, either. Although my sister would highly disagree with me, as most of her disposable income is spent on rings and necklaces, bracelets and earrings. I'm just not a "jewelry" person. I'm one of those few women who, when a holiday comes around, you can't just buy a diamond for and be done with it. We spent less than $500 on my engagement ring, wedding band, and hubby's wedding band. Granted that was going on 14 years ago, but I still wouldn't spend more than that on rings. I hated spending the $500 at the time, but we got a good deal on a vintage set at an estate sale that fit with the theme of our "1920's style" wedding.
A.And I sure don't want to convince anyone they should wear jewelry. Not at all. That is a very personal choice. My rings, including a 3 diamond engagement, diamond band and gold men's band were $1000 in the past. You are correct that the money spent for the rings could have appreciated at a much greater rate if it were invested in something else. I think a lot of people believe that buying a good quality diamond wedding/engagment ring is an investment *in addition to whatever else the ring means to them, but the diamond is a poor choice for capital appreciation. And most of the diamond ring owners will never sell the ring anyway. The only nice thing about diamonds is that they are portable - a good way of having a source of funds available to you anywhere in the world.
