Jewelry Q & A

Diamond Star Necklace

Q.Diamonds were quite popular in the late 19th century and through most of the twentieth century for engagement rings. My grandmother received a diamond solitaire set in platinum from my grandfather, and they were married before WWI. Engagement rings were frequently made of different stones, though. It ws the DeBeers diamond company that cemented diamonds as THE engagement ring stone with that slogan "A diamond is forever." I think the slogan predates the fifties, though. I believe there is a passage in To Kill a Mockingbird that describes what southern ladies did in the late afternoon in hot weather--they'd bathe and powder themselves, then change into their evening jewelry, which included gemstones. Before evening, you wore pearls and gold, but no gemstones. I believe the wedding ring always stayed on, but the engagement ring was worn only in the evening. I will confess to feeling like a prize weirdo when I go out with diamond solitaire ear studs and jeans on. I soothe my uneasy feelings by telling myself that people will just assume they're CZs. I'll check my collection of vintage etiquette books if anyone give any advice !

A.I was lucky to be the only child so I got my mother's engagement ring purchased in 1939, a solitaire with two baguettes in a platinum setting. The other pieces of jewelry I have from her are a beautiful square cameo that can be worn as a pin or pendant and she is wearing a small necklace with a diamond. I also have two nonworking watches on chains, one modern with a diamond star and moon on a thin chain and the other with filagree pattern on a heavy double chain. Lastly I have a beautiful ruby and diamond pinky ring in a rose gold setting. The daughters would have a fit if their brother inherited the engagement ring to give to a future bride unless they really liked her. The previous girlfriend was in their eyes not ring worthy. I also don't know about the other four pieces of jewelry. I don't have a clue as to who would get my jewelry.

Wedding Rings and the 50 Year Test ?
