Diamond Skull Pendant
Q.The other day I enjoyed a number of semilucid dreams featuring a friendly Australian dude. At one point I got curious as to how much detail my mind was rendering him with, and looking closely, noticed a small gold pendant on a gold chain around his neck. The pendant was diamond-shaped (as in a square with points at the top and bottom), with indecipherable script in the middle and small diamonds or white crystals etc. set just inside the top and bottom points. I was impressed at seeing this level of detail on a random image. Anyway, the image has no personal symbolic relevance for me so I was wondering if you saw any universal symbolic resonances in it.
A.When you come up with an image you don't mess around do you? This is what might be called a composite symbol that draws on many references. The square on its side refers to the earth on its axis and is a very ancient symbol. The most current references are alcemical but it goes way back to earliest times to the beginings of pictographs and petroglyphs. Each corner of the square relates to an element (as in earth, air, fire, water) with the earth at the pole pointing downward and the air at the pole pointing upward. This means that the axis (Axis Mundi = pole of the world) carries us from the earth to the heavens and this is why the diamonds are marking the two poles. The diamonds probably symbolize the diamond thunderbolt which is a tantric symbol of the Axis Mundi. The writing in the middle might be runes, might be Aramaic, but my guess is that they are Hebrew and related to the Kabbalah. It probably isn't too important what they mean linguistically, but they appear to symbolize either humanity collectively, or more probably the self. The message appears to be that the path to the heavens passes through the self and I bet it is characteristic of your dreams to put very profound symbols in ordinary surroundings to make them stand out. This is how I read it in terms of its archetypal aspects and you may have some personal associations that are meant to accompany it. You know I always see things with my own little slant and your friendly Austrailian dude seems to be the kind of dream character who possesses an earthy wisdom and easygoing casual attitude toward life. What could be better than a sunny day with nothing to do except discover some salient aspects of your personal journey of growth and development? Hard to say. I think I relatively rarely see anything that looks like a symbol in my dreams, but when I do they tend to be blatant (like the shadow of Cupid shooting me with an arrow that made the first woman who saw me perceive me as a skull-headed Death figure - Eros and Thanatos, together again
