A.don't see why it would be a problem. An even more egregious example is using a dead grandparent's engagement ring, but I'm given to beleive that this is a charming tradition rather than a miserly one. Then again, I'm confused about what "the spirit of the engagement ring" is supposed to be. My gut feeling from reading your post is that some people consider it to be that it isn't about the permanence of diamonds or the purity of gold or the infinite nature of the circle, but the ability to spend thousands of dollars to prove one's love. If it were me, I would wear the diamond earring as often as able, and have it loosely set if I wanted to propose to someone. And if she indicated that she would rather have a "fresh" diamond than one that was intimate to me, a red flag would go up. (I don't mean to imply that this is a test, mind you.) Hell, I'd make her buy me a diamond earring to replace the rock I gave her too. Why should women have all the free gifts!
