Diamond Palm Tree Necklace.
Q.I did buy some of the translucent Fimo this week and tried it out last night to make a snowflake pendant. The package said to bake it at 275 for 15 minutes, same as the regular stuff. Since a friend said she'd achieved a quartz look from using translucent *not sure which brand I guess I kind of expected that. Now I am not sure if i baked it wrong,d idn't condition it long enough or what. Anyone used to using this and have ideas? Is there a brand that does work better for a more quartz look?
A.I have used the Paragon Quik-Fire 6 for over two years to make fused glass components for jewelry and I have been very satsified with it. It comes with a built-in pyrometer, two shelves, kiln wash and a haik brush. The only other things I would suggest to get going would be a Power Controller (so that you have control over how quickly the kiln heats) and one or two small kiln posts to prop open the top of the kiln to vent. The finish can be either shiny or matte. For a shiny finish I paint it onto a pre-fused cabochon/pendant then place in kiln to fire it on. For a matte finish I take my pre-fused cab/pendant and place it in a glass etching solution for ~5 minutes (Etch-all or similar). The liquid gold ends up looking matte. I just made a necklace out of three "beach glass" pendants that I made. I used clear glass to make a large and two small pendants (use ceramic fiber paper to make a hole). I placed the pendants in Etch-All for five minutes, the clear glass came out looking like frosted beach glass. I then painted on the liquid gold decoration and fired a second time in the kiln. (Since the liquid gold is fired on at temp below full fuse firing your pieces will retain their frosted finish after firing). I made a double strand necklace with the three pendants using beaded beads, faceted labradorite, gold metallic bugles and frosted clear teardrops. I'll have to upload a picture to my website asap!
