Diamond Nose Ring?
Q.Indian jewellery is usually quite good except the nose rings . Secretions pile on it , bacteria infect them , rise up to the sinus and brain and a painful death . The ancients may have used them as a population control measure but they look awful and should be banned by the govt , along with multiple ear rings on the cartilage , studs on the tongues .

Would a gift of a nose ring be considered a more intimate and significant gift than some other articles of jewelry? Just coincidentally I saw a scene last night in the Tamil film "Thillana Mohanambal" that suggests this. Padhmini is offered a diamond nose ring by the oily rich villain, as a tribute after a dance performance. Both P's character and her mother react to this with outrage---even though the mom seems to favor the ORV as a suitor over Sivaji, who is (after all) a mere musician. Good question...I wonder if nose rings might be considered the kind of gift you'd give to a dancing girl or "disreputable girl" (like ghungroos, for instance), that when given to a "good girl" is perceived as an insult, an intimation that she's cheap and low-class. Whereas things like necklaces and bangles are acceptable for "all kinds of girls." That would be my guess...but I've never seen give a nose ring to anyone else, I've just seen similar things re: ghungroos ("Chandni" comes to mind) where depending on the spirit it's given in, it could be a sweet gesture or an insult.
