Filter Question: Should the glass be slightly loose?

Q.Should the glass in a UV filter be slightly loose? I bought a Hoya HMC 72mm filter. It looked just fine, but after I mounted it on my lens, it would give "in" a little if I start using a blower brush, or a cloth. Anotherwords, when I push it very slightly, the glass will move in a little against the metal frame. It doesn't give more than 1mm or so, but it does move. One side moves more than the other. Sounds like a return?

A.No movement is acceptable! Glass is a brittle material. When the flat pieces are diamond drilled to give the round disks, there are always little surface scratches. This is where breaks occur. Every time the scratched areas move, the abrasion increases. Typically, moisture (like from lens cleaner) will open the scratches into larger flaws and breakage results. This is based on 32 years experience in the technical glass industry. The filter element should be secured within the ring so that there is no movement in either axial direction. When installed on the lens, the filter element should be parallel to the front lens element. A loose fitting filter will also collect dirt and retain moisture. Previous post has advised of the snap ring or spanner nut and there is no sense in me repeating that info. In the future, examine a filter prior to concluding a purchase by shaking the filter and if the filter is loose, reject it. Naturally, sales personnel will tell you there is no problem with the filter being loose.
