Charm bracelet.
Q.What is a good age to get something like a charm bracelet, and once you have it, do you keep it for your child, or do you allow her to keep for the best?
A.There is nothing wrong with making her wait. Tell her you will buy her the bracelet for her 10th birthday (or 11th or 12th, or whatever age is most appropriate for the particular kid and how careful she is with her things), and then she can collect charms over the coming years. My gold charm bracelet is incredibly precious to me, too, for the exact same reasons. My grandmothers would compete to see who could get me the most expensive, bejeweled charms, and I'm so lucky that they did. I've got a solid gold horse, ballet shoes with turquoise and coral beads, a piano with rubies and diamonds, a birthday sillouette, a lacross stick, crutches (I spent much of a year in a body cast and had to learn how to walk again), a sweet 16 charm with sapphires and diamonds, a bat mitzvah charm with rubies and diamonds, a copy of my first sailboat custom made, an artist's palatte with embedded ruby, diamond, citrine, sapphire, aquamarine, emerald and topaz stones, a book with mother of pearl pages, a record, and 3 dogs representing my childhood pets. My bracelet is loaded too, and I had to add 4 links when my wrists got bigger than the 6.5" bracelet. I've got a double link bracelet and it has so many charms on it I clank and clink whenever I wear it. But I absolutely love it and keep it with my most prized jewelery locked in my safe.
