Diamond Engagement Ring Western?

Q.I was researching websites about Thai engagement. The one thing I want to find is a statement to show my boyfriend that Thais so exchange diamond rings on engagement. My sister, my relatives and my friends all did receive diamond rings on their engagement so that is what I told my boyfriend, Greg when we planned our engagement. I am a Thai while my husband to be is an American. Anyway, he told me today that all his friends told him that Thai's don't wear diamond engagement. I know he loves me with all his heart and don't mind me getting the diamond ring if that what I wanted and that it made me happy (as he said). However, the fact is that I really want him to know that I told him about the diamond engagement ring becasue I truly belive that it was Thai tradition not because I am happy to have one on my finger. Though it may not be really originally Thai tradition as Lanna traddition but I think I saw people exchange diamonds rings both in our family and circle of friends as long as I can remember. If he is really poor, I don't even mind if it's coke can tab on my finger. We joked about that before but that what I really meant. Anybody is going to get married soon? So may I ask if you exchange diamond or if your wife to be will wearing the engagement ring?? I assume she is Thai, right? so your situation is very similar to mine then

A.A book, "Thai for Lovers" by Nit and Jack Ajee describes some common wedding rituals. It does talk about giving her the engagement ring at an engagement party. it does not say what kind of ring. Tell him to get you a cubic zerconia instead of diamond. She will never know the difference. OOOPS. (kidding) I don't think it's the tradition. Some families do it that way and some don't. As far as I know from my eldest brother's wedding, yes, his wife got a diamond ring for the engagement and a plain gold ring for the wedding. However, that diamond ring is some kind of he inherit it from my mum. She got this ring from my dad's mum who wanted her eldest grandson to take her engagement ring. As for my elder brother, mmm yeah he's planning to give the diamond ring to his girlfriend for the engagement as well. so... it's the tradition? Although I did buy my wife a diamond ring it was many years after we were married. However, when we were married in Chieng Mai my wife had a gold wedding band made for herself and inscribed my family name inside the band. I believe that is a Lanna Thai custom at that time and in that particular place and social status. Engagement is a good time to test each others ability to compromise.... I bought a diamond engagement ring for Nam Peung during my April visit. I couldn't find any cites claiming it to be a tradition, but she really wanted an engagement ring. That's fine. I'll have opportunities to plead doing things "the Thai Way", too. It's not as if this were the 1st piece of jewelry I've bought her, either, and I dare say the product we got ran roughly 40% what I'd have paid for the same thing in the U.S. Then, once designed, sized and purchased, she refused to wear it until our engagement party. In fact, I had to bring the critter back to the States with me and pay duty on it. But I pled my case in animated fashion to the custom's agent in Detroit. Had the guy laughing pretty well. He took out his red pen and started zipping things off of my duty list until he had it all whittled down to about $20 total. I wanted to buy that guy a beer! But, BELCH, I digest. Naravadee, Tom makes an excellent point above. Intercultural marriages require a lot of cultural compromise. You two can look at it either as yielding to the other or sharing with each other. The point of view you assume is your intellectual choice. Conflict or adventure. You decide.
