Jewelry Q & A

Diamond engagement rings ?

Q.I think I want a diamond engagement ring (no more than £500), are there any jewellers out there who won't rip me off? I don't mind buying on-line as long as the ring can be re-sized at a local jeweller.

A.Hellfire £500 ?!?! I'm sorry but I have to play Devil's Advocate here. I've been engaged 4 times now, and that would have been £2000. Ok so 2 of those times ended in me being married but £500 would strike me as a lot of money on a relationship which *could* (read *could*, I'm not implying it will) go tits up. Actually I've never understood this, really a wedding ring should be the expensive one not the engagement ring. In my opinion anyway. Not that I wear mine anyway. I left it on the coffee table about 5 years ago and it went walkabout. My wife doesn't wear her rings either. The strange thing is our whole relationship/wedding was done "on the cheap" (I was in university at the time) so to speak and in many ways we thought it was for the best. We're still together 8 years later and perfectly happy so I guess it worked for us. I'd stick with the high street stores rather than the internet. Have a look at a few rings in different shops, the prices are more or less the same (H Samuel and Lizzy Duke are cheaper though). They should show you the ring and discuss the quality of the diamond (size, clarity, flaws etc, there are loads of websites explaining the grading system). If you're not bothered about the quality of the diamond then go for H Samuel. Most of the shops give a 10% discount on both wedding rings as well, which can be quite significant if you go down the platinum route. I think if I'm going to spend that kind of money I need to educate myself on things like diamond quality, inclusions, carats etc.. I mean I can now see why you can buy a 2 carat diamond solitaire ring for £300, because the diamond itself is full of imperfections, wheras a 1/2 carat flawless diamond could cost 3 times that.
