Lost diamond earring on soccer field

Q.I lost my diamond earring on a soccer field. The field is now pretty muddy and the grass is somewhat dense but short. The diamond was set in platinum. I tried renting a metal detector from a local shop but it seemed to beep every other step (no sensitivity adjustment). Now for my question: does anyone know if there is a metal detector that can detect a particular type of metal such as platinum? I’m at a loss (get the pun?) and would appreciate any suggestions.

A.Metal detectors work by measuring the loss (get the pun ...) in a search coil. A conducting loop in the fluctuating magnetic field generated by the search coil acts as a shorted turn, which shows up as a higher loss in the search coil - you get less AC voltage across your search coil for the same AC current. This means that the cross-sectional area of the target, and the resistance around the current loop in the target together define the size of the signal you detect. Any differences in resistivity between metals get swamped by differences in the size and shape of the thing being sought. Try hiring a metal detector with a sensitity control, and set the control on the other earing of the pair. If the biggish chunk of wet soccer field that the search coil sees has a high enough conductivity to cause this sort of loss, you are in trouble - try again when the pitch is dry.
