Ruby question
Q.First of all, I want to say that I am not a craftsman, I am a consumer so if this NG is not the place to ask this kind of question, I apologize. I recently learned that there were mined rubies and lab-grown rubies. Other than the _staggering_ difference in prices, what is the difference between the two. What I'm actually asking is that if I buy my wife a set of lab grown ruby earrings and a pendant set, am I really buying her a bunch of crap costume jewelry?
A.don't have a prima donna attitude towards my customers. I have many, many, many items that retail below $299 more for less than $199 and even more for less than $99. I was merely stating my opinion for Pete the customer of how jewelers view created stones. I have an oval ruby ring with 1/3 ct of diamonds sitting in my case for $499. The center is approx. 1/2 ct. If I knew that somebody was spending $300 ona created ruby, when my genuine is $500, I would advise them against it. You see, in my experience, it doesn't really matter how much the ring cost in the long run. Anybody that can spen 3 hundred can spend 5. I know that the big chains are selling huge created rubies to hit a $99 price point. I preffer to keep my reputation 'sparkling' by only selling genuine, quality jewelry at affordable price points so that years down the road, my customers can still enjoy their purchase rather than having to replace created baguette rubies set in paper thin shanks which are too thin to be sized from the get-go. I don't think that because a company can rise to the top (probably because of advertising and gulible consumers) selling cast in place I2's, TLB's, paper thin shanks, etc that I should pattern my business after them. I guess in your opinion NE333R0, clarity enhanced diamonds are OK too since the fill a void in the market place? I can see it now, here honey, here's your clarity enhanced diamond engagement ring for your left hand, and a created ruby for your right. Enjoy them, I'm going to go sleep in the back yard.
