Jewelry Q & A

Diamond And Ruby Engagement Ring, diamond ring question ?

Q.Can anyone answer these two questions for me? Is a pear-shaped diamond usually worn with the point toward the hand or toward the nails? For those of you who are married? do you usually wear both your band and your engagement ring? If so, how do they fit together and which is on the "hand side" of your finger?

A.If I had a pear-shaped stone, I'd have the point towards the nails, I think. I wear both my engagement ring and my wedding band, which lie flat against one another. The wedding ring goes on the finger first, so that it is closer to the heart, according to tradition. I ALWAYS wear a pear-shaped stone with the point away from the fingernail. That way it shows its proper shape when you extend your hand -- a pear (more a teardrop shape). I have one ring that is a "combo", that is, a wide band with channel set stones and a 2 carat solitaire. I wear it alone. I also have a marriage band and a solitaire, but put the solitaire on before the band. After all, I was engaged BEFORE I was married! I don't adhere to tradition....in fact, I seldom wear anything that indicates I'm married because I have a lot of beautiful gemstone rings and only wear them on the ring finger -- not displayed across my hand. JMHO. The correct way to wear a pear-shaped stone is with the point towards the end of your fingertips. I wear my engagement ring (a pear-shaped diamond) on the same finger as my wedding band (with the wedding band going on first). My engagement ring was a classic round solitaire on a thin gold band. For the wedding band, we got a wrap. The wrap/wedding band is on the bottom (the hand side), has a thicker band, and surrounds the solitaire with two smaller diamonds on each side. We got them soldered together, so I have no choice but to wear them as one ring. If I had kept my engagement ring the way it was, and gotten a plain solid gold band as a wedding ring, I would probably wear them both most of the time, but leave the diamond at home when on a trip or doing something stupid (I like to bungee jump, parasail, all that fun stuff)
