Design Your Own Engagement Ring?Q.I have been researching engagement rings for a year, and I have a question. What is the deal with a triangular shaped diamond?? First of all, there are 3 different names for that I have found: trillium, trillion, and trilliant. Also, on the design-your-own-ring sites, it isn't listed as an option other than side stones. I have found some on the Internet, but they are few and far between. Are they considered cheap or weird? Are they regarded poorly by jewelers? A.No diamond shapes/sizes/cuts are weird if it's what you like. Most of the design-your-own-ring sites suck (IMHO). They offer very limited options. Most people prefer rings that are symmetric through both the saggital plane (plane down center of ring in direction of finger) and the transverse plane (plane that bisects the proximal and distal parts of the ring on the finger). (sorry about the terms, I'm a personal trainer and that was the best way I could think of to describe it). If you have a trillion in the center (that's the name I've seen, the others are most likely exactly the same), you will have only one line of symmetry (most likely cut by a transverse plane -- i.e. the triangle points to or away from the fingertip). Of course you can have it done, but you won't see many samples/examples and you probably won't see any on the design-your-own-ring sites. I like the trillion cut for other stones, not so much for diamonds. I bought my wife a .85 marquis-cut for her engagement ring, then designed a wedding ring with two .50 trillion cut sapphires, one on each side of the diamond. It gave the set a general diamond shape, like a monogram of sorts. The two inner points of each sapphire "point" to the upper and lower points of the marquis shape. My wife thought it was weird, until she saw it. Go to a local jeweler! These 'net-based jewelers are okay for something off-the-rack, but when you're trying to design something special, it's sometimes best to sit down with someone who knows what they're doing and brainstorm about it. It might cost a little more, but the relationship that's built can have some very deep value a few years down the line.
