Jewelry Q & A

Custom Made Engagement Ring, Fit of wedding band w/ engagement ring ?

Q.I had my engagement ring custom made, and now i'm having an impossible time finding a wedding band to fit flushly with the ring. (Yes, i should have thought of that before, but i didn't!) My question is: does anyone have this problem? A small gap between the engagement ring and wedding band? and if so, do you find it uncomfortable or do you not even notice it?? I'm thinking that i'll be okay with the gap, once i get my wedding band (June '99!!)

A.I did not get my engagement ring custom made but the shape of the band will require me to have my wedding band custom made. the ones i have tried on are neither comfortable with my engagement ring or look right with it. Have your thought about having a wedding band custom made to match your engagement ring? it will probably look beautiful and fit comfortably. I have a 3 marquise diamond engagement ring that was custom made. I had to have the wedding band custom made, too, with 3 notches in it to accomodate the engagement ring. It looks wonderful together. I, too, preferred not to have this done because I could forsee times when I might prefer to wear the wedding band alone. So far this has not happened, and I happily wear both all of the time. One way that I could wear just the band is to turn it around so the notches are palm side. Another option is to buy a cheaper ring at Sam's Club or even WalMart. We bought Andy a 10k band for around $40 that he wears every day (which makes me mad that he didn't return the too tight 14K comfort fit band when we still could, but that's another story). My engagement ring was custom made (Glenn picked it out). We picked out a wedding band that has channel set diamonds. This creates a sense of light, so the gap between the two is not so noticible. When we were looking, I thought plain bands made the gap too noticible. However, I am not wearing the wedding band yet as our wedding is next weekend. I also forgot to mention that I didn't want to get a custom wedding band that would fit, since I want to be able to wear the wedding band by itself when I do things like cook in the kitchen or teach taekwondo (a martial art). I can't wear my engagement ring when I workout/teach, as the diamond is dangerous to me and others. I recommend having a ring made. I had the same problem with my wife's ring that I designed for the second se (inherited a larger diamond). We went with just a e-ring for a few months, but then had a custom w-ring made. 98% of the time they are worn together and when the w-ring is off the finger it does not matter, because it is around the house where few see the actual shape. By the way the old rings were made into un-removable matching bracelets for both of us. That solve the removing ring problem. I have the same problem that you do regarding the shape of my engagement ring. My engagement ring has a slight curve to the shape, so it will not fit flush against a wedding band. My fiance and I tried on wedding bands this weekend, and there is a small gap between the rings. I guess that I could look into having a jeweler design a band to fit my engagement ring, but I'm not that concerned about it. My engagement ring has diamonds in a channel setting on either side of my diamond. I plan to pick out a band with diamonds in a channel setting that will match my engagement ring band. I thought that the gap was minor, and it wouldn't bother me if they don't fit together perfectly.
