Engagement ring design hunting question ?
Q.My finance-to-be has a certain engagement ring idea in mind after seeing a similar design at an independent jeweler back when we first started looking at rings, which was around nine months ago. Since then, she has looked at all the retail jewelers as well as that same independent store and she cannot find a similar design anywhere else. Does anyone know of a website or another jeweler who could help with this? Preferably, it shouldn't be custom made, but if we can't find a pre-existing design anywhere else, we may have to take the custom route.
A.That varies considerably with who's doing it. I have no idea who might do good work in your area. Most of the time, the jewelers who do good custom work are local independent jewelers. I would ask around locally. Most shops that do custom work advertise it, and they should have examples to show you (both items in the shop currently and photos of past commissions). Someplace that does the work on site is likely to be faster than someplace that has to send things off, and obviously the number of commissions in the pipeline and the number of goldsmiths and the complexity of the design will all affect the timing. Also, if you're looking to buy stones, and you don't like what they have on hand, it will take a little time for them to get additional stones in for your review and approval. Also, if you've seen what you want in the past, it may well be the case that they can buy the setting rather than making it. Most jewelers have catalogs with tons of designs in them that they can order. Really, just go around to your local independent jewelers and talk to them. It's always handy to have a relationship with a good jeweler anyway ;-)
