Jewelry Q & A

Cushion Cut Diamond Solitaire Ring, Web pages "Amazing true jewelry stories" ?

Q.These will all be true stories about stores I've worked with over the last twenty years plus. Highlights and low crawling of real people who staff those marble fronted stores in a mall by you, while the names and places might be different I feel that many of the same "follies" are available at a store near you so I hope you enjoy the "stories from the front lines"... I decided to write one small story today for usenet, but heck, I have hundreds of stories of circumstances and situations which have made my life interesting, and as most of you know now I'm quick to share the best ones... Writing these down will be good for me I think, you can call it venting but I think the more you know about anything in life the better choices and decissions one makes... ...the worst part is that decissions are being made for people without their consent across the land, with little regard for much more than the mark-up/profits...

A.I have really enjoyed these "inside stories," Ray, and look forward to future ones. I thought I would contribute one from my own personal experence, from the buyer's side: My fiancee and I didn't want to get the same sort of diamond solitaire engagement ring as everyone else, so we came up with our own design. She wanted a triangular-shaped stone, and is fond of blue, so we bought a pear shaped Ceylon sapphire and had it recut into a trilliant (sp?) shape. All of the shopping we did for the faceted stone got me interested in faceting as a hobby. Now that I have been at it for only 6 months, I can easily see the "commercial" quality cut on the sapphire - several scratches across the table, and somewhat irregular crown facets. I cut a cushion triangle (granted, it was sunstone, not sapphire!) for my twelfth stone and it easily came out better than the sapphire we bought. Sorry for the "bragging," my point is just that even a relative novice can do better than commercial quality cutting. For something as sentimentally important as engagement/wedding rings, one shouldn't have to settle for the mall-store mass-produced junk! Someday, I will cut a replacement sapphire myself. Do any of the facetors here know where I can find other trilliant-shaped cutting diagrams (I have the three cushion triangles in the Long & Steel series)? Why not just order the entire Long & Steele database? As I remember, it is just $25.00- an incredible value for any gemcutter. Contact: Norman Steele 607 N 62nd. St. Seattle, WA 98103-5619 Sorry, all I have is the snail-mail address... :-( To get the cutting directions, you will need Gemcad, from Robert Strickland. email me if you want his address, too. I use both of these programs extensively; far more useful than a stack of books.
