Jewelry Q & A

Cushion Cut Diamond Engagement Ring, Designing your own *engagement ring*?

Q.I may need to be doing this pretty soon (the way things are going as of now)! =) I've known him since I was about about 13 or 14, so you know the drill... =) Anyways, back to the topic! Have any of you ever designed your own engagement rings? If so, how did it turn out? I can't stand the thought of wearing a ring on my finger for the rest of my life, and having 25,000 other people wearing the SAME exact one! ;) Any tips for me? I know I want it to be platinum...damn my good taste ;) He's VERY supportive of this decision (actually wants me to match his wedding band to mine!), so I welcome ALL ideas!

A.Actually, yes, "we" designed it. He's a jeweler by trade, we found a stone I fell in love with (it's a purple sapphire) and together we designed my ring. Have fun, but I have one suggestion...design/sketch to your heart's content but you should pass it by someone who works in the (jewelry manufacturing) trade before setting your heart on a particular design. Something that may really strike your fancy may be (due to the nature of the materials themselves) impossible to actually fabricate. This happens *all* the time in his shop when the sales people "up front" design something for a customer without thinking about how feasible it actually is to make - this can be messy, or you can end up with a less-than-stable piece of jewelry. Not to put you off, you can do alot of neat designs...just be sure before you get the final design down. The easiest way is to work with a jeweler whom you trust. I have one who is a diamond dealer at the Jewery Mart in Los Angeles. He helped design my engagement ring and then update it 20 years later. The second time we actually did it via phone calls and pictures and I mailed him the ring (insured). He sent the new one and billed later. The first was traditional white gold with a small center stone and then smaller stones surrounding it to form what looked like a circle, three diamonds on the engagement ring and three on the wedding band. The new improved version is a yellow gold band about 3/8 inch in width with five graduated diamonds. My first diamond is on the side of the center one. I get so many compliments on my ring mostly, I think, because I clean it often with jewelry cleaner so it sparkles. I also have my mom's engagement ring from 1939, a center solitaire about one carat in size with baguettes on each side in a platinum setting. She always bragged about the platinum and sure enough, it has become quite popular in the past few years. (My diamonds were never as big as hers) Congratulations!!!
