Cubic Zirconia Engagement Ring?Q.Is a pear-shaped diamond usually worn with the point toward the hand or toward the nails? For those of you who are married? do you usually wear both your band and your engagement ring? If so, how do they fit together and which is on the "hand side" of your finger? A.If I had a pear-shaped stone, I'd have the point towards the nails, I think. I wear both my engagement ring and my wedding band, which lie flat against one another. The wedding ring goes on the finger first, so that it is closer to the heart, according to tradition. I ALWAYS wear a pear-shaped stone with the point away from the fingernail. That way it shows its proper shape when you extend your hand -- a pear (more a teardrop shape). I have one ring that is a "combo", that is, a wide band with channel set stones and a 2 carat solitaire. I wear it alone. I also have a marriage band and a solitaire, but put the solitaire on before the band. After all, I was engaged BEFORE I was married! I don't adhere to tradition....in fact, I seldom wear anything that indicates I'm married because I have a lot of beautiful gemstone rings and only wear them on the ring finger -- not displayed across my hand. My engagement ring was a classic round solitaire on a thin gold band. For the wedding band, we got a wrap. The wrap/wedding band is on the bottom (the hand side), has a thicker band, and surrounds the solitaire with two smaller diamonds on each side. We got them soldered together, so I have no choice but to wear them as one ring. If I had kept my engagement ring the way it was, and gotten a plain solid gold band as a wedding ring, I would probably wear them both most of the time, but leave the diamond at home when on a trip or doing something stupid (I like to bungee jump, parasail, all that fun stuff) My SO and I have decided not to get an engagement ring either. I also know two couples who opted for stones other than diamonds. I even recently saw on a TV drama where the woman said she didn't want a diamond engagement ring because of the diamond cartels (Shouldn't it just be cartel-singular ie. DeBeers?). Anyway, is this becoming more common: passing on an engagement ring all together or going with something non-traditional? My grandmother says that engagement rings are a relatively recent phenomenon. When my husband and I were engaged 7 years ago, we discussed the whole "engagement ring" topic, and I told him I didn't want a diamond (I don't like diamonds all that much - I prefer colored stones). In fact, we decided not to get a RING, at all. Instead, I said I wanted to put the "ring" money towards the down payment on a house. We had a small civil ceremony (being Catholic and Jewish, a religious ceremony would have been tricky), no honeymoon, and lived in a rat-trap basement apartment for our first year of marriage. But, after all that, we bought our house. Whenever someone asked why I didn't wear my engagement ring, I would explain "I didn't want one, so, my husband bought me a house instead". Eventually, my husband got tired of the comments, and spent about $100 on a round cubic zirconia flanked by small green CZ's and white CZ baguettes all set in silver. Now, I get compliments on my "gorgeous" ring all the time. I still tell people it's not real, and I have a house instead. Apparently, people can't tell the difference unless they're staring right into the stone. However, I will be having a ring made to be worn with my wedding band. My husband bought me a 1.73 carat unset emerald for Christmas, and I will get it custom-set for my birthday in March. My husband has known about my love for emeralds for years, and it was this purchase, where he scoured sources looking for the best possible quality/size stone for the price he could afford AND gave me the opprotunity to set it myself that means more to me than any diamond - no matter how many months of salary he indebted himself - ever would.
