Jewelry Q & A

Colored Diamond Engagement Ring, Where to Buy Diamond/Engagement Ring ?

Q.Does anybody have suggestions as to where one can get a decent deal on diamonds/engagement rings? Has anybody encounted, say, a reputable store with exceptionally good prices? I've checked out several on-line stores (bluenile, ashford, etc.) and they all seem to have approximately the same prices. (I'm looking for something simple, probably a plainly-mounted solitaire or three-stone setting.) Also, I have freakishly small finger (size 3). Do you know any place that won't charge extra for ordering an unusual size? There's got to be a huge used market for this sort of things. How does one go about exploring that route without getting ripped off?

A.If you have a Costco membership, they have quite a few rings (ranging from simple to big $$$) for sale. For what it's worth, they guarantee that their diamonds will appraise for at least twice what you pay at Costco. (Don't know how their prices compare; never had need to buy a ring before) Grieger's in CA used to be a great source of beautiful stones at much lower cost. Haven't bought anything from them in some years-- can't afford much good jewelry these days & got my engagement ring many years ago. I would try searching for them on the web though. I saw some very pretty diamond rings on clearance last week at Walmart, of all places. Was very tempted, but didn't succumb. Personally, I'd be leery of "exceptionally" good prices, considering there's exceptionally good "clarity enhancement" techniques being used. Esp- w/stones selling for $2k or more, get a statement that it's not been lazer-drilled (gets rid of impurities) Might also pay to have it independently appraised first, and/or inquire about the return policy. A tutorial on diamonds: http://www.diamondreview.com Lots of used rings in Sunday paper, but I would probably pay to have it appraised first, I'd also want to see orig- receipt.
